INTEL,FACEBOOK WORKING ON CHEAPER AI CHIP:-

Like a GPU is a chip tailored to graphics processing, and a DSP is for signal processing, an AI chip is designed to do particular AI tasks more efficiently.

 Intel and Facebook are working together on a new cheaper artificial intelligence (AI) chip that will help companies with high workload demands.

At the CES 2019 here on monday, Intel announced "Nervana Neural Network Processor for Inference" (NNP-I ).

"This new class of chip is dedicated to accelerating interference for companies with high workload demands and is expected to go into production this year", Intel said in a statement.

Facebook is also one of Intel's development partners on the NNP-I.

Navin shenoy, Intel Executive vice president in the Data Centre Group, announced that the NNP-I will go into production this year.

The new "inference" AI chip would help Facebook and others deploy machine learning more  efficiently and cheaply.

Intel begans its AI chip development after acquiring Nervana Systems in 2016.

Intel also announced that wiyh Alibaba,it is a developing by athlete tracking technology powered by AI that is aimed  to be deployed at the Olympic Games 2020 and beyond.

The technology uses existing and upcoming Intel hardware and Alibaba cloud computing technology to power a cutting-edge deep learning application that extracts 3D forms of athletes in training or competition.

"This technology has incredible potential as an athlete training tool and is expected to be a game-changer for the way fans experience the Games, creating an entirely new way for broadcasters to analyse, dissect and re-examine highlights during instant replays," explained Shoney.

Intel and Alibaba,together with partners, aim to deliver the first AI-powered 3D athlete tracking during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

"We are proud to partner with Intel on the first-ever AI-powered 3D athlete tracking technology where Alibaba contributes its best-in-class cloud computing capability and algorithmic design," said Chris Tung, CMO, Alibaba Group.

LG  ANNOUNCES WORLD'S FIRST ROLL-OUT OLED TV

 An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is a light-emitting diode in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current.

LG Electronics (LG) has unveiled the world's first rollable OLED TV  in which the screen retracts into a box when not in use.

Built on a concept unveiled last year, the 65-inch Signature OLED TV  R will be available this year for sale, the company announced on Monday at the CES 2019 here. 

"A rollable OLED TV is a true game-changer, liberating users from the limitations of the wall and freeing them to curate their own personal space which no longer needs to be reserved full time for TV viewing", said LG.

LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R can transform itself to offer three different viewing options - 

  1.Full View
2.Line View
3.Zero View

allows customers to use the TV in ways that were impossible before the development of OLED technology.

1.FULL VIEW:- Full view delivers a large-sceen viewing experience revealing the full extent of the contrast,depth and realism.
Users can use can use their voice to get things done with Amazon Alexa,a new addition to LG's AI TV lineup in 2019, as is support for Apple Airplay 2 and Homekit.
With Aple Homkit support, customers will be able to control their LG TV using the Home app or by asking Siri.

2.LINE VIEW :- Line view allows the TV to be partially unrolled, allowing for management of specific tasks that do not require the full TV screen.
"In line view,users can choose from features such as clock, Frame, Mood, Music, and Home Dashboard",said the company. 

3.ZERO VIEW:- When in zero view, all 65 inches of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R is hidden from view, tucked away in the base.
"Even in zero view, users can enjoy music and other audio content which emanate from the 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atoms audio system" said LG.

 SAMSUNG GALAXY X: THE BRAND'S FIRST FOLDABLE PHONE

Samsung revealed something huge: its first foldable screen, which opens clamshell-style and flattens out for a tablet-size display. The infinity flex display, as the tech is called, is an entirely new direction for Samsung smartphones that required development of new materials and processes to make it functional.

SAMSUNG GALAXY X: 8 YEARS IN THE MAKING

The idea of foldable phone isn't new to Samsung, in fact way back in 2011 the company showed off a prototype of exactly that.

The device looked chunky and awkward, but even back then it somewhat worked,remaining intact after 100,000 folds,with only a 6% drop in brightness at the center,where all the folding action happened.

This clearly wasn't a commercial product, but later that year Samsung launched a concept video of a fully bendable mobile device.It could fold out from a phone-sized screen to a tablet-sized one,showing Samsung's ambitions for the technology. Now, technology hasn't advanced quite this far, so don't expect the Samsung Galaxy X to be just a folding screen - but the vision is an interesting one.

IMPLANTABLE CARDIOVERTER-DEFIBRILLATOR

INTRODUCTION


                                   

                                                                                      An implantable cardioverter -defibrillator(ICD) or automated implanted cardioverter - defibrillator(AICD) is a device implantable inside the body ,able to perform cardioversion,defibrillation,and pacing of heart.The device is therefore capable of correcting most life -threatening cardiac arrhythmias.The ICD is the first -line treatment and prophylactic therapy for patients at risk for sudden cardiac death due to ventricular tachycardia.

"AICD" was trademarked by Boston Scientific Corporation ,so the more generic "ICD"is preffered terminology.

PHENOMENON

                             

The process of implantation of an ICD system is similar to implantation of a pacemaker .In fact ,ICDs are composed of an ICD generator and of wires. The first component or generator ,contains a computer chip or circuitry with RAM (memory),programmable software,a capacitor and a battery;this is implanted typically under the skin in the left upper chest.
The second part of the system is an electrode wire or wires that,similar to pacemakers ,are connected to the pacemakers,are connected to the generators and passed through a vein to the right chambers of the heart.The lead usually loadges in the apex of septum of the right ventricle.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ICDs &PACEMAKERS


Just like pacemakers,ICDs can have a single wire or lead in the heart (in the right ventricle ,single chamber ICD),two leads(in the right atrium and right ventricle,dual chamber ICD) or three leads (biventricular ICD,one in the right atrium ,one in the right ventricle and one on the outer wall of the left ventricle).

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ICDs & PACEMAKERS


The difference between ICDs & pacemakers is that pacemakers are also available as temporary unit and are generally designed to correct slow heart rates ,i.e bradycardia,while ICDs are often permanent safegaurds against sudden life -threatening arrhythmias.

INDICATIONS


Implantation of ICDs is meant to prevent sudden cardiac death and is indicated under various conditions.Two broad but distinct categories are primary and secondary prevention
.
Primary prevention refers to the patients who have not suffered a life-threatening arrhythmia episodes.

Secondary prevention has the strongest evidence for benifits and it refers to survivors of cardiac arrest secondary to ventricular fibrillation or hemodynamically unstable sustained ventricular tachycardia after reversible causes are excluded.

LIVING WITH AN ICD

                                    



People who have an implanted cardioverter defibrillator can live full lives. Usually the ICD may not improve the quality of life of the patient, although it may provide a strong degree of reassurance. As with a pacemaker, however, living with an ICD does impose some restrictions on the person's lifestyle, outlined below:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES  Almost all forms of physical activities can be performed by patients with an ICD. All forms of sports that do not pose a risk of damaging the ICD or because of the underlying cardiomyopathy can be undertaken by the patient.

ELECTRO-MAGNETIC EQUIPMENT  Equipment using large magnets of generating magnatic fields, or any similar environment, must be avoided by patients with an ICD. As with othe metallic objects, an ICD is normally a contraindication to the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, several ICD manufacturers have recently introduced MR-Conditional ICDs, which allow the use of MRI under specified safe operating conditions.

QUALITY OF LIFE  Implantable crdioverter defibrillators have demonstrated clear life-saving benefits, but concerns about patient acceptance and psychological adjustment to the ICD have been the focus of much research.
Researchers, including those from the field of cardiac psychology, have concluded that the quality of life (QoL) of ICD patients is at least equal to, or better than, that of those taking anti-arrhythmic medications. The largest study of examined 2,521 patients with stable heart failure in the SCD-HeFT trial. Results indicated that there were no differences between ICD-treated and medication-treated groups at 30 months in patient-reported QoL.

Implantable technologies sense parameters of various diseases and can either transfer data to a remote center, direct the patient to take a specific action, or automatically perform a function based on what the sensors are reading.

An implant is a medical device manufactured to replace a missing biological structure, support a damaged biological structure, or enhance an existing biological structure. Medical implants are man-made devices, in contrast to a transplant, which is a transplanted biomedical tissue. The surface of implants that contact the body might be made of a biomedical material such as titanium, silicone, or apatite depending on what is the most functional. In some cases implants contain electronics e.g. artificial pacemaker and cochlear implants. Some implants are bioactive, such as subcutaneous drug delivery devices in the form of implantable pills or drug-eluting stents.


CLASSIFICATION OF MEDICAL DEVICES

Medical devices are classified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under three different classes depending on the risks the medical device may impose on the user.


  • CLASS 1 DEVICE:-  class 1 devices are considered to pose the least amount of risk to the user and require the least amount of control. Class 1 devices include simple devices such as arm slings and hand-held surgical instruments.

  • CLASS 2 DEVICE:-  Class 2 devices are considered to need more regulation than class 1 devices and are required to undergo specific requirements before FDA approval. Class 2 devices include X-ray system and physiological monitors.

  • CLASS 3 DEVICE:-  class 3 devices require the most regulatory controls since the device supports or sustains human life or may not be well tested. Class 3 devices include replacement heart valves and implanted cerebellar stimulators. Many implants typically fall under class 2 and class 3 devices.
